2004/12/17 - Staff News
CAGE's staff will all be on board by the 20 December 2004. To prepare for their functioning as a high performance work team, the CAGE Secretariat held a two-day, in-house training seminar in order to align their abilities and experience to the overall objective and purpose of CAGE. The outcomes of the seminar are defined roles and responsibilities that have been formalised into Performance Charters. These are to ensure that the CAGE beneficiaries, as clients of CAGE, are accommodated in a professional manner in their interactions with CAGE. Further, the Implementing Agency, National Treasury, and the funder, the European Union are able to track the performance of the Secretariat in terms of meeting the needs of the programme. They bring respective talents from their background of donor programmes, research, academics and skills development. Please feel free to contact them using the details listed under Contacts. 2004/12/17 - Networking News
The CAGE Programme Co-ordinator also attended a Conference on Assessing the Threat of Terrorism in Southern Africa, in Botswana. The conference provided varied perspective of issues of security within the region and globally. The challenges around regional co-operation in terms of the free movement of people and the opening-up of borders within the region was further reinforced at this conference.

CAGE continues to receive e-mails and calls from partners within the field and has had the opportunity to meet with role players at seminars and conferences that have been set up to disseminate knowledge and to foster networks within this arena of conflict and governance. However, daily, we realise that there are more and more key people who we have not yet met. CAGE therefore encourages all visitors to the web-site to register on the Calls for Expression of Interest and the Focus Areas so that it too may play its role in facilitating collaboration.

CAGE's offices will be closed from the 23 December 2004 to the 3 January 2005. We trust that the many who share this break, will find time to rest and we thank the many who will continue to work for our well being during this busy time.
2004/11/11 - Seeking suitably qualified and enthusiatic people
The Conflict and Governance Facility is seeking suitably qualified and enthusiatic people in the research arena to assist the Facility with the assessment of the Proposals received in the current Call for Proposal that closes on the 22 December 2004. Please review the advertisement and we trust that if you meet these specifications, you will apply.
2004/11/10 - CAGE's collaboration with partners in the conflict and governance arena continues
The Programme Co-ordinator was invited to attend the Fourth International Forum for the ACTION FOR CONFLICT TRANSFORMATION NETWORK. This network strives to build a broad platform of people involved in peace and development programmes. ACTION is divided into regional secretariats: ACTION Asia, ACTION America and ACTION Africa-The Coalition for Peace in Africa (COPA). Aside from being a wide reaching global network, ACTION has a number of practical and grass-root driven programmes such as the Peace and Development platform (PAD), the Communications Hub and the ACTION Support Centre which is situated in Johannesburg.

This event was held in Johannesburg from the 31 October to the 7 November 2004. The gathering was a visible example of global partnerships with participants from Bangladesh exchanging ideas with those from the Cameroon and Australia.

What was striking about the event was that so many of the people simply wanted to tell their stories about the conflicts in their countries and their views of possible solution. The dialogue was characterized by searching discussion in terms of the why’s and where’s of conflict. A further striking characteristic was that conflicts the world over have very similar root causes but each has incredible complexities in terms of how it plays out in each national and transnational arena.
2004/10/22 - Call for Expression of Interest
CAGE is inviting prospective partners to register on their Data-Base and publicised this Call in the National Media from the 22-24 October. The advertisement is included here on the web-site for your convenience.
2004/10/19 - South African Netherlands Research Programme on Alternatives in Development
The CAGE Programme Co-ordinator attended a workshop run by the South African Netherlands Research Programme on Alternatives in Development.(SANPAD)
This is a unique collaborative research programme that has been financed by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1997. SANPD funds high-quality collaborative research by South African researchers conducted in association with Dutch researchers. In Phase 2, SANPAD will fund research projects related to the following themes:
  • New Approaches to Economic Development
  • Social Development and the Quality of Life
  • Natural Resources and their Governance
  • Democracy, Government and Civil Society
  • Culture, Identity and Society
  • Poverty Reduction
SANPAD also follows a Call for Proposal route, as does CAGE. SANPAD makes this as an annual call for submission. SANPAD also works on building research capacity and encourages collaborative initiatives, all areas of commonality with CAGE. CAGE attended the workshop in order to benchmark with an established funding programme for research in South Africa and to foster collaborative ties. CAGE could also be used complementarily with SANPAD initiatives or vice versa. The CAGE Programme Co-ordinator presented key issues around the Conflict and Governance programme and a summary in terms of how funding may be accessed. For more information on SANPAD, visit their web-site on www.sanpad.org.za or www.sanpad.org.za/grant_funding.htm email them on info@sanpad.org.za.

Networking News
CAGE remains deliberately under-networked until the public Call for Proposals has entered the public domain through a series of print media advertisements. This is to ensure transparency and equity in the grant-making process, however CAGE played an instrumental role with two “sister” programmes attending the launch of the EPRD-SF Support Facility in Woodmead on October 8, 2004 in Johannesburg and attending the strategic review of the Foundation for Human Rights in Pretoria from the 8-9 October. Valuable collaborative activities were explored between the programmes
